Bombers Eggbutt Elliptical Lock Up bit has cheek pieces which stops any pinching of the lips and gives a slightly more solid feel against the side of the face. It also restricts the bit being pulled through the mouth.
The release is slower and the mouth piece is more stable than a loose ring and this helps the horses who are a little busy in the mouth. The Elliptical Lock Up is a double break bit with a locking lozenge in the centre.
It is more powerful than the Control Plate due to it having a smaller surface area. Consequently, a horse using his tongue as a means of pushing against the bit will find they need to show a little more respect for the riders hands. Therefore when the rider is attempting to take control, the horse will draw back and tuck his chin in, coming back to a better point of control.
By Locking up the Elliptical joint, it removes any nutcracker action, meaning it will bear less pressure on the horses bars. It in turn applies more tongue pressure at the point of lock up but not until then, leaving the tongue free to glide under the lozenge and with most of the action to the bars and lips of the horses mouth allowing the horse a certain amount of control using the tongue as a cushion to ease the speed at which the bit comes on and off the bars of the mouth as the horse is being ridden.
This bit is really good for riders who want the freedom of choice to work the horse up into the bridle without the worry they will lose the movement created from the leg due to the horse escaping out of the hand by pushing against the bit with the tongue. Using strength to evade your attempt to achieve a soft outline in forward movement combined with the desired level of containment which is particularly suitable for big horse who try and evade because they just cant be bothered to do it!
A completely brilliant bit design that is full of answers.
